-All pieces start by rolling a slab of clay to the desired thickness.
-The clay is then textured with stamps and rollers to prepare for cutting.
-Each piece is cut by hand with a knife or with various shaped cutters.
-Pieces are air dried for a few days and loaded up in the kiln for a ” bisque fire”.
-Each firing takes about 8 hours in the kiln, then takes another day to cool down enough to unload & sort.
-Each piece is glazed by either dipping or brushing the glaze.
-All are loaded up in the kiln again for a ” glaze fire” which takes another 8 hours to fire and full day to cool.
-Pieces are then unloaded and sorted by size & color for assembly.
- I start by setting up a wooden form to define the perimeter measurements. This form helps contain the pieces and ensures the exact size.
-If the design includes a perimeter liner/frame of tiles, they are cut to fit and placed in the form.
-The main characters are then placed within the frame, and the remainder of the mosaic is filled in with hundreds of Dots and various supporting pieces.
The mosaic pieces are then secured together with clear film across the top to complete the process.
